Varanasi Tourism: Our Ganges River Ride

People bathed enthusiastically in the toxic waters of the Ganges River in Varanasi, India. They were totally convinced that it was safe and in fact, that the river is holy and confers healing benefits. We didn't ever take a dip in the water to try it, but it must work for some people. Many of these people seemed very happy to be there.Related Posts:Varanasi, IndiaThe Radisson in Varanasi, ...

Varanasi Tourism: Hindu Fire Ritual Clips

You haven't seen anything until you've seen the Hindu Fire Ritual in Varanasi, India. We didn't even know what it was when our guide asked us if we wanted to go. Originally we said, "no," because we were exhausted and unmotivated. What's the Hindu Fire Ritual? But our guide insisted that we didn't want to miss it. We left at dusk from our hotel (the Holiday Inn, Desani) and walked to the ghats as the sun ...

Varanasi Tourism: Hindu Fire Ritual Part II

The Hindu Fire Ritual in Varanasi really wowed us. It was one of the most amazing performances we've ever seen. It was truly magical (both literally and figuratively). Some of the locals sat on the ghats while others sat in boats on the river, casting little butter candles into the river. We've seen some amazing acts performed live, but this wasn't just a performance...it was a religious ceremony and it was ...

Varanasi Tourism: Arriving at the Hindu Fire Ritual

We almost didn't go to the Hindu Fire Ritual in Varanasi because we didn't know what it was and we were exhausted. I'm so glad our guide insisted that we go! The videos that we took of the Hindu Fire Ritual don't do it justice, but it's absolutely magical. If you're doing tourism in Varanasi, be sure to find a guide to take you to the ghats for the fire ritual. People light little butter candles and place ...

Varanasi Tourism: Buying a Sitar in India

On our way back to the Radisson Hotel in Varanasi, after passing several snake charmers, beggars, an outdoor loo, cows, and an overwhelming array of other miscellaneous things, John decided to pop into the sitar shop. Needless to say, he wasn't thinking clearly. Though it would've been cool to have a sitar from India, it wouldn't be so cool to carry on our backs from Varanasi to India and onward back to the ...

Varanasi Tourism: Traffic in Varanasi

The traffic in Varanasi is hard to describe. The streets are filled to overflowing with cars, rickshaws, mopeds carrying goats and gas cans, bicycles piled high with plastic tubs, pedestrians including sadhus, cows, and kids. We never left our hotel room without a guide to help us navigate the streets, which is really saying something because we have never needed a guide before or since that time in any ...

The Radisson Hotel in Varanasi, India — By Jennifer Shipp

It’s not always easy to find a good hotel in India. Even some of the name brand hotels that are familiar to westerners fail to meet the minimum standard in this country. We stayed at the Radisson in Varanasi, India for five days before traveling onward to Delhi in 2014. Given the chaos that exists outside the hotel, it's a good choice if you're traveling through Varanasi (or at least it was as of ...

Varanasi, India: Not for Newbies — By Jennifer Shipp

Varanasi is not the kind of city that can easily be summarized in one article…even one very long article, but I'm going to try. Varanasi is even more crazy and chaotic than Delhi, but the Varanasi vibe is spiritual rather than economic. This is a city that welcomes death with open arms.

We visited Varanasi in 2014 after spending 30 days in Nepal. We stayed at the Radisson Hotel within ...
