Before Lydian’s estudiantina group started the callejoneada, she warmed up by the church as Jace looks toward the Jardín Union.
The estudiantina in Guanajuato take turns starting their callejoneadas in front of the church that sits right next to Teatro Juarez near the Jardín Union.
Lydian learns what she can before the callejoneadas start and during the performance, if there’s moment to learn some new little tidbit of a song from someone nearby, she’s expect to soak it up.
There are so many opportunities to make friends here, it blows my mind. People meet at restaurants to converse. There are opportunities to be a part of something. Living in Mexico has proven to me that life doesn’t have to be lonely, quiet, or solitary.
Fruit (usually grape) juice is served via a hand-pump on the callejoneadas.
The estudiantina group takes audience members on a tour of the back alleys (callejones) of Guanajuato city.
Callejoneada in Guanajuato, Mexico. In the backdrop, the city looks like a well-cut jack-o-lantern every night of the year.
During this part of the callejoneada, the men are separated from the women

In this photo, Lydian is performing with the estudiantina group on a callejoneada near the Callejon del Beso in Guanajuato, Mexico.
At Christmas, the group hoisted a piñata and kids took turns whacking the thing to traditional Mexican music.
The estudiantina group moves through tight, winding alleys as the musicians play their instruments and the audience follows along.
The professor teaches Lydian new songs whenever he has time. This lesson took place at a bar.
