People were so scared for us when we traveled to Egypt in 2016, but it just wasn’t a scary place. It’s definitely a place where there are gender-related tensions, but terrorism just isn’t something we had to worry about very much. There were fewer violent acts that happened in Cairo while we were there than in comparably sized U.S. cities like Chicago. Online, we were warned to avoid places like Khan al Khalili, but it was just as safe as any shopping center anywhere in the world. Kinda makes one wonder about political agendas. Cairo is such a neat place. It’s the first and one of the best tourist destinations in the world.
