We arrived at the Sillustani ruins via taxi from the Puno airport.
The landscape on the approach toward the Sillustani ruins is spectacular.
It looks flat, but these ruins sit at about 13,000 feet. When we first got out of the car, it wasn’t all that easy to breathe.
There’s a little bit of a hike required to get to the Sillustani ruins from the parking lot. At 13,000 feet, it feels like you’re carrying a fifty pounds of bricks on your back…take it slow.
Until we got there, we didn’t know what we’d find at the Sillustani ruins.
Lydian was happy to be out of Lima though.
These tall structures are called Chullpas. They’re burial tombs.
Though there are chullpas in other places in the area, these are best-preserved example of them, apparently.
They’re like silo-shaped pyramids.
The landscape around the Sillustani ruins is gorgeous and the Chullpas are a unique feature.
After about an hour at the Sillustani ruins, we headed toward Lake Titicaca.
