The air currents in Beijing are perfect for kite flying. One of my favorite memories of Beijing was walking through Yongdingmen Square on the way back to the hotel (The Yongdingmen Hotel) in the middle of the night while locals were flying kites hundreds of kites with blinking lights and long tails flowing in the wind above us. Toward the end of our trip, after watching everyone else flying kites and playing with toys we’d never seen before, we finally broke down and bought a kite and a couple of “toys” from a friendly salesman we passed everyday on the street.
