Bus Ride in Chennai

On intracity Indian buses in Chennai, the women sit on one side and the men on the other. Since there weren't any seats on the women's side of the bus, Lydi and I stood. There was room on the men's side, so John got to sit while he took this video. We walked about halfway from our vacation rental in Chennai to the Kapaleeswarar Temple on the other side of the city as our outing on this day. Dengue in India — By Jennifer Shipp

As we flew into Delhi on August 8th, I read about the outbreak of Dengue Fever happening in Delhi this year. I’d expected problems like Dengue in the south while we were in the state of Tamil Nadu in  Chennai. Before traveling there, I’d expected Chennai to be fairly “wet” and humid. I figured that mosquitos would be more of a problem in the south than in Delhi, but apparently, I was wrong.

A Perfect Life: The Virtues of Poverty — By Jennifer Shipp

In 2002, we were so poor, there was a time when we couldn’t afford to buy eggs and John had to bum change off a guy who was almost as poor as we were to buy gas to get home from John’s newspaper route (he had 2 of them at the time). That was in the first few months post-9/11. Our business had gone belly-up. Work prospects had dried up. I was pregnant at the time. And we’d just bought our first house along ...

No Clothes and a Monkey in My Hair — by Lydian Shipp

So tonight we’re in Denver. As we prepare for our flight to L.A. tomorrow, I feel like I’m actually going to board the flight to India in the morning… But I won’t be boarding the flight to India. I’m going to L.A. first. In a way, I’m kind of glad about it… Even though I have to get up at before the crack of dawn to get to the airport, and I’ve taken my shower the night before and put my hair up in the ...

Down In It… — By Jennifer Shipp

Some things are worth it. Some things aren’t. Sometimes I notice myself doing things that are worth it. Sometimes I notice myself doing things that aren’t. Sometimes I just go through life checking off entries on my To Do list. Sometimes, I slow down enough to notice the significance of little things like how trees in our front yard wiggle when the wind blows from the north or how the light is ...

On Being Hungry… — By Jennifer Shipp

I organize my life around mealtimes and snacks. Food is central to how I organize every single day of my life. I use food as a form of entertainment as well as an excuse to socialize. But I’d never really thought about the elevated role that food plays in my life until this trip to India and Nepal.

Before coming to India and Nepal, I’d never seen so many starving people in one place. ...

United Airlines Nightmare — By Jennifer Shipp

Flights, Bags, Visas

When we travel, sometimes things happen that I just don’t want to write about. They’re things that I’d rather forget or that involve lots of petty details. Often, these are things that happen en route to our destination. When we transition from here to there, I forget all the details because there are so many of them.

But I don’t ever want to forget ...

Playing with Fire in the Middle of a Busy Street: India — By Jennifer Shipp

Psychologically, though I haven’t left yet, I am already in India and Nepal. I’m in both places. A part of my mind perpetually rehearses the trip from New Delhi to Kathmandu. It begins in New Delhi and proceeds to Gorakhpur, India by train. Then I take a three-hour bus ride to Sunauli and walk across the India/Nepal border to find our hotel in Bhairawa, Nepal. After a restful night’s sleep and some food, my ...
