The Egyptian Museum sans the Tourist Hordes — By Jennifer Shipp

Today we visited the Egyptian Museum. I better understand now the people’s sentiments about the displays. It’s true that very few of the items in the huge warehouse-of-a-building are marked, but for me, that didn’t diminish the coolness factor of the place. In fact, the lack of descriptions left more to the imagination as we slowly walked through the huge collection of Egyptian “stuff”.

I ...

Terrifying Tunisia — By Jennifer Shipp

I've had to wait to post all of our experiences about Tunisia until we left the country because I was afraid of being stopped, detained, and who-knows-what else at the airport. Only a few days ago, Al Jazeera in Egypt was shut down, and Charlie Hebdo in France bombed for saying the wrong things about the wrong people. Censorship is something we've experienced in China, but the political tenor was quite a ...

Amazing Egypt — By Jennifer Shipp

Today is Friday, a holy day in Cairo. It's Worship Time and loud and horribly distorted Arabic sermons are ringing out across the city. I’ve situated the table on our balcony to face the pyramids. There is nothing but sand between me and them and though I’ve seen the pyramids from all directions and stared at them for hours already, I’m still not tired of looking at them.

We arrived later ...

Scaring the Bejeezus out of Your Teen Through Travel: An Experiment in Progress — By Jennifer Shipp

When I was a teenager, I always thought I was missing the party. It really bothered me. I was obsessed with being wherever the action was. Sometimes, I’d sit in my little bedroom and wonder, “is this as good as it gets?” Then I’d feel depressed and hopeless. Later, I’d go out and raise some kind of hell doing something completely dangerous and stupid. Each time I survived, I’d come home feeling better. If I ...

Livin’ on the Edge…of Total Boredom — By Jennifer Shipp

There’s a part of me that would like it if everyone at home thought that we lived our lives on the edge. If they thought that every moment of our journey was filled with suspense and excitement as we travel the globe…Globetrotters …that’s what we are! We live for excitement and our days are filled with it!... But no one can live like that. The Law of Diminishing Returns says that the more excitement I get ...

Standing in Line with Terrorists and Ebola Victims — By Jennifer Shipp

I’ve never watched the news or read newspapers religiously. Periodically, when there’s an important story that interests me, I’ll follow it, but generally speaking, if it doesn’t affect me, my family, friends, or neighbors I believe I don’t need to know about it. Important news finds its way to me without me pursuing it. There’s enough to grapple with inside my personal social circle to keep me thoroughly ...

Loved and Praised, Hated and Rejected…in Arabic:On Learning a New Language — By Jennifer Shipp

I’ve been studying Arabic very “lightly” for quite some time. Over the past two years, whenever we were stationed at home and I was bored in the evenings, I’d sit and write Arabic letters over and over. Occasionally, I’d read a little bit of Arabic or learn a new word. Bit by bit, in small, insignificant steps over the course of these two years, I’ve learned the Arabic alphabet and acquired a respectable ...

Tampons as the Measure of Modern Societies — By Jennifer Shipp

What are tampons? Feminine hygiene products, yes, but they’re more than that. They symbolize, very succinctly, the feminist movement and the equality that women in the United States have worked so hard to achieve. Most women, if they were educated about the various feminine hygiene products that have been invented through the years, would probably choose to have all the safe and healthy options that are ...

Working to Relax in Tunisia — By Jennifer Shipp

Since we have the ability to work remotely, from anywhere in the world, travel has an interesting effect on our productivity. Instead of becoming less productive when we’re away from home, we delve into our work enthusiastically as an escape from the Unknown. At home, we spend most of our time trying to entertain ourselves by stirring things up to make the boring-ness more interesting but overseas, we try ...

Navigating the Foggy Streets of Disillusionment in Mestre, Italy — By Jennifer Shipp

Mostly, we view all of the booking and planning of our trips as part of our adventure. We meet people when we set up our vacation rentals and sometimes they become friends. It’s always a challenge to deal with airlines, but we have a system now and we’ve gotten quicker at researching and booking our flights. Getting to and from classes, the grocery store, or tourist attractions is always an adventure once ...
